Talbert House

Talbert House is a progressive, multi-service, community-based nonprofit agency. Talbert House serves a broad population and develops and delivers services in mental health, community corrections, substance abuse and welfare-to-work. These services have two basic purposes: to improve social behavior and enhance personal growth. Talbert House operates multiple service sites throughout the Greater Cincinnati area. Talbert House has begun to treat tobacco as a drug and is using the 5As brief intervention technique to address tobacco use in outpatient and residential settings. The goal of the 5As strategy is to ensure that every client who uses tobacco is identified and offered treatment. The 5As include the following steps:

  1. Ask – the client if he or she uses tobacco
  2. Advise – him or her to quit
  3. Assess – willingness to make a quit attempt
  4. Assist – him or her in making a quit attempt
  5. Arrange – for follow-up contacts to prevent relapse

By using the 5As and addressing nicotine dependency as part of the treatment process, Talbert House is focused on reducing tobacco use and nicotine dependency among chemically addicted clients including those with co-occurring disorders as well as staff.
