In Ohio, only students are prohibited from using or possessing tobacco products on school grounds.  It is up to individual school districts to regulate tobacco use on school grounds by staff and visitors.

What is a 100% tobacco-free schools policy? A policy that prohibits smoking or any tobacco use by students, staff and visitors while on school grounds and at all school functions.

Why should schools choose to be 100% tobacco-free? Having a 100% policy in place:

  • Reduces student, staff and visitor’s secondhand smoke exposure
  • De-normalizes tobacco use
  • Diminishes smoking’s negative health impact
  • Reinforces educational messages about smoking and helps to reduce student tobacco use
